Although Lab freezers may look like freezers used in your home or perhaps slightly bigger than it, they are used to store critical materials, some of which are hazardous. Temperature is important for these critical materials because any temperature change can diminish their effectiveness and this is why lab freezers need to have constant regulated temperatures. Lab freezers comes in different sizes from the extremely small that can fit under any counter, the regular-sized upright freezers which are similar to our home freezers, and the extremely large walk-in freezers. The lowest temperature that a lab freezer should be kept is a slow as -85 degrees Celsius, way below the average house hold freezer temperature range which is between 0 and -10 degrees only.
Lab freezers are used for many different purposes. Serums and tissues samples, samples of DNA and RNA, bacteria strains, and protein extracts are some of the materials that are placed inside a lab freezer. Organs and blood are preserved in lab freezers in hospitals, while medicines are kept in lab freezers in pharmacies. The reason why specimens are kept preserved and stable is because they can degrade in time.
Like your home refrigerator unit, there are also lab freezers that are used for general purpose. And just like a home refrigerator, these lab freezers also have shelves inside and in the doors and in order to prevent the escape of the cold, there are rubber gaskets to protect it. These lab freezers are much colder than our home freezers since they can reach as low as -25 degree Celsius compared to our -10 degrees Celsius, These freezers can be locked and come with an LCD temperature display so that you can keep an eye on the temperature without opening the lab freezer to check.
There are many different kinds of lab freezers. One type of freezer can reach very low temperatures and consists of freezer racks that can store thousand of samples. There is another super low lab freezer reaching the temperatures of -150 degrees Celsius without using liquid nitrogen.
Lab freezers are also used for storing flammable materials. Volatile materials can be stored in specially designed freezers. These freezers meet OSHA standards but they need alarms, monitors, and back up features if freezing critical items or high value life science materials.
Another type of freezer is the blood bank freezer that is used to store blood and plasma. Blood cannot be stored in regular freezers since the temperature cannot be maintained when the doors are opened. Blood bank freezers are durable and require very little maintenance because of their importance in saving lives and blood has a very short shelf life.
